108 Paths to Vanity | 2004

Venue: 100 Tonson Gallery, Bangkok Thailand

Attachment to one’s look, body and appearance leads to eventual sadness once one has to go through detachment, be it death or any kind of loss.

One’s look often shapes the way one behaves and interacts with others. Many women are afraid of getting old, aging, and losing interest from the opposite sex.  People in the third sex also share this fear.  Plastic surgery, hence, is being used and accepted in today’s society.  One’s personal tastes, supported by today’s social environment, pull out desires and fear from the subconscious.

Michael wishes to be white

Hiroaki desires to be tan

Mimi dreams of having double lids

Madonna likes to be a virgin

Tomb (Raider) girl wants to have fuller lips

Chan girl hopes for a sharpnose

Wishes, desires, dreams, needs, and hopes all reflect desires hidden in you.  As if it is a virus that can explode at anytime and recur at any moment.  108 Paths to Vanity is an exhibition on this theme, for those who pretend to forget themselves and those to want to forget who they are.
